POWNAL, Vt. -Ed Lohmeyer, racing career was harnessed to a rising when his "greetings" ar-" at his. home town of Mongaup Valley, N.Y. He sold his stable of standardbreds, shipped off to Marine boot camp and for two years, he saw no and heard no sound of sulkies.

For Ed, spotights and the cheers of the crowd became floodlights and the screams of battle. No tracks, but trenches, no races, but rice-paddies and the swarming, steaming jungle of Vietnam. And always, during rough and lonely moments, he relived the memories that for a Marine in Da Nang often seemed the only reality the only sanity; his years as a kid learning from the masters, his uncles, the harness famed. Manzi Brothers working out on training farm his dad manages in Monticello his first drive in competition capturing the winner's purse at Monticello. Meadows, Freehold, Green Mountain, Roosevelt Raceway.

After 13 months in Vietnam, Ed Lohmeryer returned to Green Mountain. Two years older, many years wiser, he seemed a stranger in town. But a winner at a race track is not a stranger long, and he was a victor opening night with Newport Hit and has won three times since with members of his re-established nine-horse stable. This same combo won last Thursday night. Few opening night spectators knew the significance of this moment for the 24 year old veteran.

It was a moment of pride of reassurance, of reaffirmation of his belief in a nation where 2 man could receive the accolades of the crowd by the skill which guided his horse to run just a little faster than his competitors. As he walked that slow. satisfying gaint back to the Green Mountain stable area, Ed Lohmeyer knew, as he had known on the battlefields of Vietnam, that this is what he had been fighting for.
